One of the great things about living in Western Mass is that the farms around here can provide winter produce, and earn a living during the non-harvest season. We have three Saturday markets in our region– Northampton, Amherst and Springfield. This morning, I took a drive over to Amherst to check out the market at Amherst Regional Middle School.

At Red Fire Farm, I picked up freshly laid eggs, carrots, beets, garlic, onions, celery root, sweet potato and rainbow chard. From El Jardin, some loaves of country french and a festive cranberry pecan bread. I checked out a new-to-me cheesemaker called Robinson Farm, and selected a nice, creamy, mild cheese called ABarndance. On a whim, because I always seem to need it when I don’t have it, I bought a bag of whole wheat pastry flour from Four Star Grains. On my way out, I grabbed a quick breakfast of maple walnut scone and a cup of coffee from Black Sheep bakery, along with a stollen as a treat for the toddler I left behind this morning, much to her dismay.

I look forward to supporting our local farmers through the winter, and am so glad to have the opportunity to do so.

Back in June, I started hearing some buzz about this event called the Harvest Supper. I didn’t much attention to it… I figured it was some expensive event that required tickets. Then, in July, Hope+Olive’s Soup&Games Night benefitted the Harvest Supper. Okay, so now I knew something was up. It turns out that the Harvest Supper is this awesome annual affair that highlights local foods to benefit the Greenfield Farmer’s Market coupon program. The coupons are distributed to low-income families to encourage them to shop at the Farmer’s Market. All the food for the supper is donated in-kind, and many businesses in Greenfield had collection jars for donations. The Harvest Supper is completely FREE and staffed by volunteers.

Despite (or in spite of) the rain today, the show went on as planned.

The Greenfield Farmers’ Market opened today! The market is small but high-quality. We bought some cheese, honey, greens, parsnips, leeks and a loaf of rosemary-olive oil bread (snagged the last one!). To celebrate the opening of the market, there was an Allen Block open house. Greenfield Coffee is giving away free coffee all day today, and Raven bookstore is giving away children’s books, one per child. Kevin Keady is doing three performances of The Raven at the store. Hopefully, we’ll catch one of them later! The acupuncturist in the Allen Block building is offering free acupuncture today, as well.

Everyone was out and about in the beautiful weather, and we saw many of our new friends, who got to meet 2 week old Stella for the first time. All in all, a great opening to the market season!
