One of the great things about living in Western Mass is that the farms around here can provide winter produce, and earn a living during the non-harvest season. We have three Saturday markets in our region– Northampton, Amherst and Springfield. This morning, I took a drive over to Amherst to check out the market at Amherst Regional Middle School.

At Red Fire Farm, I picked up  freshly laid eggs, carrots, beets, garlic, onions, celery root, sweet potato and rainbow chard. From El Jardin, some loaves of country french and a festive cranberry pecan bread. I checked out a new-to-me cheesemaker called Robinson Farm, and selected a nice, creamy, mild cheese called ABarndance.  On a whim, because I always seem to need it when I don’t have it, I bought a bag of whole wheat pastry flour from Four Star Grains. On my way out, I grabbed a quick breakfast of maple walnut scone and a cup of coffee from Black Sheep bakery, along with a stollen as a treat for the toddler I left behind this morning, much to her dismay.

I look forward to supporting our local farmers through the winter, and am so glad to have the opportunity to do so.

Back in June, I started hearing some buzz about this event called the Harvest Supper. I didn’t much attention to it… I figured it was some expensive event that required tickets. Then, in July, Hope+Olive’s Soup&Games Night benefitted the Harvest Supper. Okay, so now I knew something was up. It turns out that the Harvest Supper is this awesome annual affair that highlights local foods to benefit the Greenfield Farmer’s Market coupon program. The coupons are distributed to low-income families to encourage them to shop at the Farmer’s Market. All the food for the supper is donated in-kind, and many businesses in Greenfield had collection jars for donations. The Harvest Supper is completely FREE and staffed by volunteers.

Despite (or in spite of) the rain today, the show went on as planned.

I wish I had more photos to show you but alas, between the rain and having our hands full with the kids, these were all we could manage.

Upinngil.

June 21st may be the official, scientific start of summer but everyone knows that summer REALLY begins when the strawberries are out. Some friends clued us into Uppinngil Farm, in the town of Gill, just outside of Greenfield. We headed out this morning to pick some strawberries.

Afterwards, we headed over to the farm store and picked up some Uppinngil cheese and flour, and a carton of Diemand Farm eggs. The farm also sells their own grass-fed beef, and holds cheesemaking classes. Check out their website. http://www.upinngil.com/

The Greenfield Farmers’ Market opened today! The market is small but high-quality. We bought some cheese, honey, greens, parsnips, leeks and a loaf of rosemary-olive oil bread (snagged the last one!). To celebrate the opening of the market, there was an Allen Block open house. Greenfield Coffee is giving away free coffee all day today, and Raven bookstore is giving away children’s books, one per child. Kevin Keady is doing three performances of The Raven at the store. Hopefully, we’ll catch one of them later! The acupuncturist in the Allen Block building is offering free acupuncture today, as well.

Everyone was out and about in the beautiful weather, and we saw many of our new friends, who got to meet  2 week old Stella for the first time.  All in all, a great opening to the market season!

Snow!

Our first major snow since moving to Greenfield. These pictures were taken from our window.

Henry took Alice for a walk this morning in the snow and they made their way down the block to Energy Park.

Our new apartment faces the Greenfield Commons. In the header picture, King is looking at Town Hall across the way. In between our building and Town Hall is a little park where there is a farmer’s market from May to October. We are around the corner from Main Street, where the Greenfield Library is a hop and a skip away, and of course, our favorite restaurant, The Hope and Olive is around another corner, almost directly behind our building.

Henry did all the moving on Saturday, and managed to have the truck unloaded in two hours, thanks to David and Lauri’s help! Alice and I joined Henry on Sunday. Mom drove up on Sunday as well to drop off our new-old kitchen table and to have brunch at the Hope and Olive. Alice missed her daddy terribly and the reunion was sweet.

We’ve been busy unpacking and getting settled into our new routine. Henry works from home in his new job, which is new for us so we’re working on striking a balance between daddy having time and space to do his work, and Alice getting the attention she wants from daddy. This morning, I took a break from unpacking boxes to take Alice to the library. I got a library card and we checked out the Children’s Reading Room, which is comfy and has lots of books perfect for Alice. Alice and I made some friends while there, and we’re going back later this week to check out the Mother Goose story time.

We have stuff everywhere, waiting for a home but most of the kitchen is unpacked. Coming from a smaller apartment that had different storage configurations, we’re finding that we need a dresser for our clothing, and organizers for the bathroom. We also have HUGE windows in the bedroom and the living room that need to be dressed. We’ll be ordering some roman shades for those.  Because our new space is so open, we’ve being superconscious of how much stuff we have! We got rid of a lot of stuff before we moved, and we’re still getting rid of stuff. We freecycled Alice’s dresser this morning, and we’ll be replacing it with a bigger dresser that can hold all our clothing. Because we have a kitchen table now, we’ve Freecycled our desk as well. We left our old couch behind because we plan to go back to do some cleaning, and we anticipate that we’ll have to return for other business as well… not to mention, the couch doesn’t fit in the elevator! So, we’re excited to buy some new living room furniture as well. Our new couch will be a sleeper (the old one isn’t), so we’re prepared for your visit! We’ll be sure to have everything in its place by then.

Here’s an article about Jordi Herold, our new landlord and the developer of our building: http://www.recorder.com. We’re very pleased with our apartment. It’s a great landing spot for us until we can sell our apartment and start looking for a new home to buy, which will probably be not far from Greenfield!
